Zoisite read from her gold trimmed fairy tale book. "Isn't that beautiful, kitty?" The small kitten resting on the princess's lap purred in response. Zoisite sighed and allowed her gaze to wander up above her into the cherry blossom covered branches of the tree she was sitting under. Zoisite loved to be in the beautiful cherry orchard. It was her favorite place to sit, relax and daydream - something she did quite often. The afternoon breeze gently stirred the tree's soft pink petals and a flurry of them came fluttering down to the ground. Several landed on Zoisite's hair and her kitten batted at them playfully. Zoisite absently stroked the kitten as she continued to watch the falling cherry blossom petals. "Wouldn't it be nice to have someone to love?" she said aloud. "Prrr?"asked the kitten. "Of course I have mother and father, kitty but a prince like Alexander would be nice..." "Zoisite..." The princess's thoughts were interrupted by a soft woman's voice - a voice she recognized as her mother's - the queen of Zoisica, one of many kingdoms in the Crystalverse. Queen Zoey was just as lovely as her daughter, with long wavy copper hair, deep green eyes and fair soft skin. She was also sweet and kind as well as pretty and her subjects loved her. "Oh, hello Mother," said Zoisite. "What are you up to, my dear?" asked Zoey. "I was reading my book," replied Princess Zoisite. "It's so nice sitting out here." Zoey smiled and sat down next to her daughter, hugging her knees to her chest. She was wearing a soft casual dress of pale sky blue with a dark blue sash. "And what is your story about?" she asked, smiling. "It's very good, Mother. It's about a girl who finds her true love." "Ah, true love," replied her mother. "It's a wonderful thing when it happens. Just like when I fell in love with your father." "Do you think that I will find my true love?" asked Zoisite. "Of course, little one. Someday he will appear and you will go off to begin your life with him," said her mother dreamily. "And then maybe someday you will become a mommy." "I don't know if I want to leave you Mother." "You will never leave me, my sweet. You will always be in my heart, wherever you may be." Zoisite leaned her head on her mother's arm and kitty snuggled deeper into Zoisite's lap. The cherry blossoms continued to fall down as each dreamed her own happy daydreams... "Oh!" cried Zoey suddenly and laughed - a sweet yet startling sound to anyone who had never heard it. Her daughter possessed the same laugh, as their voices were similar in pitch. Zoisite lifted her head and kitty flicked her ears. "What?" asked Zoisite. "I just remembered why I came to find you," replied Queen Zoey. "The seamstress needs to make the final adjustments to your gown. She asked me to bring you to her so she could finish it." "Right now?" asked Zoisite. "Well a good ten minutes ago," answered her mother and laughed. Zoisite smiled. Her mother, although nearly twice her age, was really still as young as she was in spirit. Zoisite could tell her mother anything she could tell a good friend. "Maybe we should teleport back so we don't keep Glenda waiting any longer," suggested Zoisite. The two women held hands and faced each other, kitty resting in Zoisite's dress pocket. In a swirl of cherry blossom petals, they disappeared. They reappeared in the royal sewing room. "Here we are," said Queen Zoey. The sewing room was a colorful blend of fabrics, yarns and trimmings along with garments in various stages of completion. Zoisite spotted a lovely sea green gown with embroidered pink roses around the neckline and hems. "Oh, is that my dress?" she asked. "It looks wonderful!" "Yes, dear," said Glenda. "I added the extra roses while I was waiting." She winked. "Sorry we took so long," said the queen. "It's a lovely day, you know." "No need to apologize. Now then, princess, if you'll just try this on," said Glenda, lifting the gown from its hanging place on the wall, "I can finish the sash for you." Zoisite happily obeyed, removing the plain cotton dress she wore for outdoor play and putting the lovely gown on over her pink silk underslip. "Oh, it looks so lovely on you, honey!" exclaimed her mother as Zoisite stepped up onto the platform in the middle of the room. Glenda opened a case of pins and proceeded to pin the pale pink sash on for sewing. Zoisite stood still so as not to interfere with the seamstress's work. "Well I'll leave you to your work, Glenda," said Queen Zoey, and turned to leave. "Don't forget that I must also work on your dress Your Majesty," reminded Glenda. "Of course not. Zoisite can get me when you are finished with her. I will see you later." Zoey waved and disappeared in a flutter of pink cherry blossom petals. Magic powers ran in Zoisite's blood, as they did with most beings in the Crystalverse, in different degrees. It was up to the individual to use and develop them. Zoisite had been born with certain abilities, among them the ability to summon a flurry of cherry blossoms - her favorite flower next to the rose. She could also teleport by herself or with her mother or father, levitate herself and create illusions. She also had telekinetic power. Her parents had these abilities and taught Zoisite some of what she knew. Of course she was no master like the great Lord Malachon she had heard of. He was extremely powerful, but he only used his powers for good. Zoisite had heard that he had a son who was also quite powerful... "All right, take a look dear," said Glenda with a final stitching motion. Zoisite stepped over to the looking glass and admired her gown. She imagined herself dancing in it at Queen Serenity's royal ball. All the kings, queens, princes and princesses of the galaxy were invited. Zoisite would be going to this ball with her mother and father. She breathed a soft sigh. "It's perfect." Glenda smiled. "If you're happy with it then you may go now. You should enjoy the rest of the day." Zoisite put her cotton dress back on and placed the gown on its hanging place. She reached out and gave it a gentle caress before she went off to find her mother. "Aren't the flowers lovely?" asked the princess, indicating the colorful garden of blossoms around her. "They're just as beautiful as you are," replied the prince standing beside her. "Oh, Darien I've missed you so...Why is it that you have to be away so long?" "I must be there for my people. My duty is to them, Serena." "You will be coming to the ball, of course?" asked Princess Serena hopefully. "Of course," replied Prince Darien, and cupping Serena's chin in his hand gave her a gentle kiss. The sorceress Beryl watched the young couple from her crystal with growing irritation and rage. She wanted Prince Darien for herself and he seemed to be in love with this silly young girl! She couldn't stand it! "Beryl," called an older woman's voice - Magdelene, her mentor. "Where are you?" "Here," Beryl replied, still staring at the image in her crystal. What she wouldn't do to get rid of that pest Princess Serena... "What are you looking at in that crystal of yours...Isn't that Queen Serenity's daughter?" asked Magdelene as she entered the chamber and came closer. "Yes..." "She's having a ball tomorrow...I believe we received an invitation from the Queen..." "How convenient..." muttered Beryl under her breath. "What?" "Nothing." "Are you still sore because Darien chose Serena over you?" "I don't understand what he sees in that little twit..." "Now, Beryl, that's not a nice thing to say about Serena. She's a very sweet girl. Besides, there will be lots of young princes there...I'm sure you can find another one you like..." "Perhaps but I want Prince Darien..." "Though as you can see he seems to love her very much...It would take a magic spell to separate them...What about that handsome young man with the red hair? He seems more your style." "Rubeus? Hmmph, he's practically glued to Princess Catsy and she can have him." "Oh, well, I'm sure there is someone out there for you...if you look hard enough you will find him...anyway please do something other than staring into that crystal, hmmm? It's not good to do that for too long." "Yes, Magdelene." But as soon as the older woman departed, Beryl resumed her spying on the princess and prince. Her crystal was her window to the universe, showing her whatever she wished to see. It worked on the energy of its master, in this case, Beryl who had owned it practically since birth. Magdelene gave it to her and showed her how to use it. All she had to do was focus her will on it. It got easier and easier as she matured, and had more strength. It had become a powerful aid to the young sorceress. She had looked at animals and flowers of the Crystalverse when she was younger, but lately she had concentrated her magic energy on viewing princes. When she first saw Prince Darien of the place called Earth, she fell in love with him and decided he would be hers. She was convinced he would have been, too, had it not been for Princess Serena. And when Beryl wanted something she did not take defeat lightly. She scowled at the image in the ball. She wanted Prince Darien! "He should be mine..." thought Beryl. "If I had the power...I would destroy her...yes that would be nice..." Beryl stood there almost in a trance concentrating her hatred on Princess Serena. Magdelene had said not to succumb to jealousy and hate - they were evil and would only lead to destruction. But Beryl did not care. All she wanted was Darien...the power to win him to her...the power to get rid of Serena...power... She felt evil thoughts creeping into her...swelling up from a dark place deep inside - a place we all have but try to forget... "You must have a balance, Beryl, a balance of your light and dark side...don't ever let the darkness win you over..." But she would do anything to have Prince Darien...anything... The image of Darien and Serena became a dark swirling cloud inside her crystal. I can give you the power you seek... a voice inside whispered. "Oh?" murmured Beryl. Power to get what you want...you can rule the universe with your prince at your side... Beryl smiled wickedly, listening to the evil she had conjured. Just accept me as master... ******************************************************* Malachite stood outside on the stone balcony, staring off into the horizon. This was one of his favorite places to be, high up in the tower where he had studied his magic since he was knee - high to his father. The room behind him was filled with books; in fact a large bookcase took up one whole wall of the room. It held volumes containing knowledge and magic not readily available anywhere else. Lord Malachon had one of the best libraries in the Crystalverse. Malachite devoted his free time to learning the magic of his ancestors. He was always very focused, as he was even now, looking out at the beauty of their kingdom. He hardly noticed when someone came up behind him and reached up to place a delicate hand on his shoulder. "Malachite?" He turned around to see a lovely woman with long ultra-pale sea green hair - so light it matched the highlights in his own star- kissed mane. "Oh, hello mother." "Are you all right? You've been in here for hours." "I'm fine, mother, I was just resting now." Celica noted the stacks of heavy books resting on the table. "Studying hard, my son?" Malachite nodded. "Well, I just thought you might be hungry for your dinner. Would you like to come downstairs with me?" Malachite shook his head at the queen. "No, not tonight. Would you have it sent up here please?" he asked. "If you wish," she replied. "Malachite?" "Yes, mother?" "You will be coming to Queen Serenity's ball with us tomorrow, won't you?" she asked softly. "I know your magic is very important to you, dear, but you do need a break once in a while..." "I will come," he replied. "Although I feel they are rather tedious affairs." Celica sighed a little. "I wish you would open up a bit more. The others seem to think you are cold-hearted, which I know is not true...but that's the image you seem to project..." "Mother I am who I am. I will not be phony." "I know. And I love you." She nuzzled up to his arm. "I just want you to be happy, that's all." "Happiness for me right now is to become a master sorcerer as my father is. That is what I want." "Yes, you are very close to that goal and I'm very proud of you. We both are." She looked up admiringly at her strong handsome son. "But please try to enjoy yourself tomorrow...books aren't the only thing in life." "I will try for you mother." Malachite would do almost anything for this lovely sweet creature who had given him life. Celica smiled. "I will have one of the maids bring up your dinner for you. Your father is waiting for me." She turned and left the room, carefully making her way down the long spiraling staircase. Malachite continued to stare off into space wondering if anything besides his studies would make him happy... ********************************************************** Malachite awoke to the sounds of the early morning birds chirping in the trees. Half a dozen songs could be heard coming from the woods around the castle. Malachite had slept in the tower room as he sometimes liked to do although he did have a very luxurious and spacious bedroom in the castle chambers below. A small wooden bed just big enough for himself with blue quilts stood against the tower wall at a right angle to the bookcase. A half-wall was behind his headboard, big enough to divide the space into almost two rooms. On the other side of this half-wall was the doorway to the balcony, a circular wood table for reading or eating at, and wooden shelves for various objects such as Malachite's collection of rocks and crystals. A small square table with a lamp and his favorite books on it was next to his bed. He was comfortable up here, away from everything but his studies. His father also made use of the room as it was very practical for studying - rarely did anyone come all the way up the flight of one hundred and sixty two stone steps. He opened a carved wooden box and took some dried fruit biscuits from it. His mother had made them especially for him in case he got hungry up in the tower. Malachite wanted to get in some study time before they prepared to go to the ball. He wasn't too thrilled with all the dancing and socializing at royal balls, but he did enjoy the music immensely. The musicians would be there playing the waltzes and minuets for couples to dance to. Usually he would stand outside on the balconies and just listen to the music, letting the beautiful serene melodies carry him away...far, far away...until someone would come over and try to join him. He sighed. There was always one girl or another chasing after him, following him or trying to get his attention. Once in a while it was rather amusing, but Malachite preferred to be left alone. Putting a dark blue satin robe on over his nightwear, Malachite turned to a chapter in his book that he had yet to master and began to read intensely. His greatest dream in life was to be a master sorcerer just like his father, the great lord and king Malachon. Hours passed by as he studied spells and concentrated on his magical powers. The green gown swirled around and around as Zoisite twirled about in front of her rose-carved full-length mirror to the song she had playing in her head - a beautiful romantic waltz that she had heard in her mother's music box. Queen Zoey had an exquisite pale blue porcelain box carved with roses that she kept on her vanity. "It plays the music that your father and I were dancing to when we fell in love," Queen Zoey had told her young daughter one day when little Zoi had been fascinated by it. "I like to play it while I brush my hair." Zoisite had that wonderful song in her head as she danced in her lovely new dress imagining herself at the ball. In her eighteen years she had been to several royal social celebrations, but none of them would be as grand as this ball of Queen Serenity's. Princess Zoisite continued to dance away dreamily in her pretty bedroom, completely unaware that someone was watching from a dark lair... "Look at these silly fools preparing for the ball," said Beryl as she observed members of the Crystalverse primping and dressing in their finest for the evening's event. Soon they can be under your command, whispered the voice belonging to the being Beryl had freed with all her negative energy. Feeding on the intense dark energy of Beryl's thoughts, her crystal had led her to the dark place where the great Negaforce was lurking, waiting for its release. Beryl had released it, believing in the great power that it promised she would obtain if she only obeyed its command. Thanks to Beryl it could now grow and take over the beautiful Crystalverse with its darkness. You will be Queen of this universe, starting with this very kingdom, said the female sounding voice, referring to the kingdom in which Beryl now lived as a princess. We will take it over and make it a dark kingdom! But first we must rid ourselves of certain obstacles... "Yes," murmured Beryl as she made her way silently to the throne room, enchanting everyone she chanced to meet with her dark energy, making them subservient minions to her purposes. Their magic powers would be become dark as her own had become. She reached the throne room where the queen sat addressing her court of lords and ladies of the Crystalverse. Everyone turned to stare at the princess now possessed by dark energy. "Don't you know it's rude to stare?" laughed Beryl and released her dark energy at them. "Beryl! What is the meaning of this?" cried Queen Berina, rising to her feet. Beryl approached the throne. "It's time for a new queen," she said in a low voice, her eyes glowing softly. Royal guards rushed to protect the queen but it was no use. The Negaforce overpowered them all, bending them to Beryl's will. The throne room became dark and twisted by the negative energy. "Hear me," said Beryl. "I am your queen now and you are all mine to command!" "Yes, Queen Beryl," came the response from the court members now transformed by the negapower. Exhausted Beryl collapsed into the throne. "Ah, that took a lot of power." But it will be well worth it, my queen. 'My queen.' Beryl smiled with satisfaction. She finally would have the power to do something about the little princess who stood in her way. The music swelled as princess Serena twirled around on the balcony. The royal orchestra was rehearsing some musical selections for the evening. "Don't wear yourself out now, princess," said a voice behind her. "Or else you won't be able to dance with me later." "Hmm? Oh, Darien!" cried Serena happily as she turned around. "You're early." "Well I just couldn't wait until this evening to see you. Thought you might want to go for a walk, if you aren't busy, that is." "Oh, no, I'd be glad to!" They walked along the grounds outside the palace that looked prettier than ever decorated lavishly with flowers. Tonight would be a night for them to remember... "There." Zoey arranged the last of the flower blossoms in Zoisite's hair as the princess sat on a cushioned stool in front of her mother's vanity. "You look beautiful." "So do you, mother," said Zoisite, admiring her mother's graceful figure and long copper hair that was flowing down her back beneath her tiara. Strands of tiny sea green pearls hung around her pale neck. "You aren't wearing your crystal lavaliere." "That's because it is yours now," replied the queen. "I am giving it to you my love. It will bring you good luck and protect you when I am not near." Zoey took the necklace out of its dark green velvet lined box and placed it around her daughter's neck. "Oh, thank you! It's beautiful," Zoisite exclaimed, placing a delicate hand to her chest to touch the necklace. "I'll treasure it always." Queen Zoey smiled at her daughter. "Well are my two lovely ladies ready?" asked a masculine voice. "Yes dear," said Zoey turning to her husband who had just entered the room. "How beautiful you both look! And what a pretty necklace you have Zoisite," said the king, bending down to look at the jewelry gracing his daughter's neck. "Just like the one I gave to your mother." He smiled at his wife. "I hope you don't mind. I thought Zoisite should have it. It looks lovely on her." "Of course not. It suits her as it did you. You look like twins. No one will be able to tell that you are her mother." It was true. Zoey looked as young and pretty as Zoisite did. They could easily be mistaken for sisters. "Oh, I wouldn't say that..." "I would." Galen leaned forward to kiss her smooth fair cheek. Zoisite sighed. Her mother and father loved each other so much. She was lucky to have such loving parents. "We should go now," said Zoey, her cheeks flushed prettily from the kiss. "We don't want to miss any of the fun." Zoisite joined hands with the king and queen and a soft glowing light surrounded them. Concentrating on their destination, they teleported from their Crystalverse kingdom of Zoisica to the Moon kingdom.
