She stirred her tea roughly, aggravated by the remarks of the arrogant auburn - haired warrior. Something about him really annoyed her. "That "obnoxious jerk" was none other than General Neflite, my second in command and your superior, Zoisite." "Hmmph." Zoisite had thought that he was handsome, but this Neflite seemed to be somewhat male chauvinistic towards her. "Why do these dreamy looking Negaverse men have to be all egotistical and superior acting?" thought Zoisite. Handsome, yes. But friendly...no. Malachite and Neflite seemed so self-absorbed, like vain peacocks. Though at least Malachite, distant as he was at times, gave her a chance. Neflite just dismissed her as being unimportant. "He doesn't think that I will make a good general," said Zoisite. "Just because I'm a girl." Zoisite pouted, her sulky facial expression reflected in her tea. Malachite had thought the same himself about Zoisite, that she would be too weak to be a warrior. But he was beginning to see a certain spark in Zoisite, something that told him the young female would make a good warrior after all, if she would just put her mind to it. He smiled down at his pupil. "Well, you'll just have to work hard and prove him wrong, won't you?" Zoisite nodded to her mentor and promised herself that she would. She'd show that conceited Neflite that girls could be generals, too! She just knew that she was meant for some kind of a high position, and she would earn it and hopefully make Malachite proud of her in the process. "Are we doing anything else today?" asked Zoisite. "I think you've caused enough stir for one day." Malachite grinned slyly. "Rest and study your books." ************************ "Stupid girl," thought Neflite. Why had the great and powerful Negaforce chosen a weak female to be the fourth general? Zoisite couldn't possibly know what she was doing. The airhead had flitted right into the midst of a combat zone. And she probably couldn't even hold a sword. But she was pretty. Zoisite was the prettiest girl he had seen in a long, long time. Too bad that she was a general - in - training. If she were a yoma, she could be his servant. But she was scheduled to be the next general of the Negaverse army. "She is bound to fail, though," thought Neflite. One so delicate and flighty as Zoisite could not possibly complete her complex training. Then she would be demoted to assistant, or lower. Consoling himself with those thoughts, Neflite focused his attention to the stars. **************************** The warrior girl hurled her staff angrily at the image she had just conjured up. The likeness dissipated into mist, and the weapon crashed against the wall, leaving a dent in the stone. "What's the matter with you, Chental?" asked Ikumi, walking up to her comrade in the warrior school. Ikumi was a good fighter with mean karate chops. She specialized in martial arts. Ikumi had a lean body, and long, straight silky purple hair pulled up into a high ponytail. "That stuck - up little brat, Zoisite. She got the position that should be mine," replied Chental as she picked up her weapon. "Mine!" Chental emphasized her words with a bang of her staff. Ikumi could understand Chental's resentment of the new pupil, and she sympathized with her. Before the arrival of Zoisite, Chental was considered the best student candidate for the general -in- training. But the Negaforce had convinced Queen Beryl that Zoisite was the one who was destined to fulfill that position. Ikumi couldn't see why Zoisite was chosen, any more than Chental could. "Well, if you can keep beating her in combat she may get kicked out and she'll lose her position," suggested Ikumi, grinning evilly. Chental smiled. She was the best in the class, after all. She could show that weak, sappy little girl a thing or two. "You're right, Ikumi. She'll be finished if she keeps failing and crying in class. Then it will be my turn." ******************************* Malachite browsed his bookshelves, searching for a good volume on telepathy. "You really like that kitten, don't you?" observed Malachite, looking over at his pupil. Zoisite had allowed her kitty to join her in the armchair while she rested and brushed up on her crystal knowledge. The little pet was snuggled close to her mistress, and looked curiously at the book she was browsing through. "Well, she's a whole lot friendlier than SOME people around here," answered Zoisite. Then she sweat-dropped. Had she just said that to General Malachite, Lord of the Negaverse? Was she crazy? She was surprised at herself for getting sarcastic. Zoisite wasn't so sure of herself these days. Just how was she supposed to be? Malachite raised an eyebrow. "Zoisite, the Negaverse is NOT a place for sweetness, friendship and love. Nor is it a place for weak little girls. It would help you to remember that." Malachite could see that Zoisite had her insecurities and feelings, but she must not show them here. To do that would be to risk destruction. "Yes, Lord Malachite. Please forgive my comment." Zoisite frowned and hid her face behind her book. This place was strange. No one seemed to be friends here. Not in the court and not at the Negaverse Academy, either. "Will I have to return to the Academy?" she asked. "Yes, Zoisite, you are required to take classes there with the other girls. In fact, it has been arranged for you to take class there every day, and then come home to study with me. I will teach the advanced class there, while you take your training classes. We can both be together in the evening. You remember your combat class? You will take that, and also a magic crystal studies class. They will alternate, every other day." Zoisite remembered her first experience at the Academy all too well. She didn't like to think she would have to do that everyday. "But - "What's the matter?" "Oh, nothing I guess." Zoisite did not want Malachite to consider her a weakling. But she had her doubts. Dealing with her fellow students did not seem like it would be fun. "You were hurt, I know," said Malachite gently. He was still upset over seeing Zoisite's bruises when she came home from school that day. Something else had happened that day, too, something much more significant, but he could no longer recall what it was. But Malachite knew that Zoisite would have to toughen herself up. "You must get over that and go on," he continued. "You have to be tough, Zoisite. Otherwise, you will never be acceptable to the queen. She does not like weakness." "Yes," answered Zoisite. It seemed that her destiny was to be a warrior. And it seemed she really had no choice in the matter. Fine, then. She would be tough. She'd show them all. If Lord Malachite wanted a warrior, then he would get one. Submit ReviewReport Possible AbuseAdd Story to FavoritesAdd Author to FavoritesAdd Author to Author AlertAdd Story to C2 Archive 1.
