She opened her green eyes sleepily and groggily lifted her head, still hazy from a dream. In her dream she was in the midst of a forest, peering into a crystal blue lake, and reflected in it there was a beautiful woman with long, long copper hair, fair skin and eyes as verdant as the trees around her. It was not her own reflection, Zoisite knew. This woman was older. Could it be an image of herself in the future, or was it a relative, perhaps her mother? The lady did not speak, but something about her eyes gave Zoisite the impression of kinship. The knocking stopped and the door opened. "Time to get up, my lady," said Yasha from behind her ivory mask. "You must prepare for class." "Oh right, the academy," Zoisite remembered. "What, the great Lord Malachite didn't come to wake me himself?" she thought. "Okay, I'm getting up," she said, slowly rising into a sitting position on the bed. "Would you like scrambled eggs or toast for breakfast?" "Uh...I don't know..." Zoisite rubbed her eyes, trying to determine how hungry she was. "Maybe both." Even a simple decision, like what to eat for breakfast was tough when you were half-asleep. "As you wish, lady." The servant departed, taking Zoisite's laundry with her. Zoisite sat for a minute or two, letting her thoughts surface. What class did she have today? Who was that lady she saw in her dream? Did her mother live somewhere in this world? Did she have a sister, or a brother, maybe? Did anyone love or feel in this place? Would she ever get the hang of this warrior life? "Oh..." she groaned. Too many questions. Really, it was too early to rise. She seemed to recall sleeping late and waking to a buffet brunch once, but that was long ago. She shrugged out of her pyjamas and pulled on her uniform. She looked down at Kitty, who was still happily curled up in the little basket Zoisite had obtained for her. Lined with a soft blanket, it was a cozy, warm resting place. Zoisite tried not to think about how much *she* loved to stay curled up in her own bed. Instead she focused on her dream. Did she have a mother here somewhere? Somebody that loved her? She must have someone. Everyone had a family. Even warriors. She wished she knew Malachite well enough to talk openly with him. She had a right to know about her heritage, didn't she? She hadn't always been a Negaverse warrior going to an academy and learning the arts of warfare. Before that, she was just somebody's daughter, living a peaceful life. Once she was someone's little girl. But whose? ******************************************** When Zoisite came into the dining room, Malachite was waiting for her, his food untouched. As soon as she was seated, he began to eat. "He has such impeccable manners," she thought. "And physical quality," she added absently, studying his neatly groomed hair and perfect body. His jacket was left half-open as usual, exposing delectably tanned flesh. "Today, you will have your crystal studies class," Malachite said after consuming a slice of toast. "You will need to bring your book." He indicated the blue covered volume resting on a chair nearby. "Hey, he took that from my room!" Zoisite noticed. She was a bit peeved at having her personal space invaded. "So you sneak around in people's private rooms?" she demanded. Didn't he trust her? "Zoisite, I do not "sneak around." I am only looking out for your well being. I am fully responsible for you, and I must make sure you do what is required. And, my dear, you will remember that this castle is mine, and all the rooms in it belong to *me*. That includes your bedroom." Zoisite gritted her teeth. Had she just been admiring him before? She took it back. Well, not really. He was still handsome. But, ooh, he was just too smug! Zoisite decided that it wasn't a good time to ask her question. ************************************ Malachite escorted Zoisite to the Negaverse Academy, and showed her the way to her class. "Be good, Zoisite, and pay attention to the teacher. I will come for you when your class is over." He handed Zoisite her textbook. "Yes, sir." Zoisite watched him go, still a little miffed that she was treated like a child. Malachite left her and went upstairs to his sorcery students. Zoisite walked down the hall to her crystal magic class. On the way, she spotted a warrior girl who looked familiar. "Of course, that's the reprobate from my combat class," she thought. The girl gave her a hostile look and whispered something to her companion. "What's with her?" wondered Zoisite as she slipped inside classroom 789. "Name, miss?" asked the woman leaning against the teacher's desk. Long, fine, lavender colored hair hung down to her slender waist. She wore an aqua colored dress that set off her complexion nicely, and silver jewelry dangled from her ears, neck and wrists. "Zoisite," she replied. "Row 5, seat 6." Dr. Amethyst pointed to an empty desk. "Well, hello..." drawled a husky voice as Zoisite sat down. He let out a low whistle, looking her over. Zoisite turned to see an incredibly cute young blonde sitting next to her. He had aqua hued eyes and pale skin, like her own. She gave a little smile, and played with her hair, a nervous habit of hers. "So that is General Zoisite," Jedite thought, studying the fair girl in the sky-blue and grey training uniform. "What a bombshell!" He had known to expect a woman, of course, but nothing had prepared him for the sight of this copper haired goddess in military garb. "Attention class," called Dr. Amethyst. "As some of you may know, I am Dr. Amethyst, high mage of crystal wisdom. You are the privileged few students chosen to be in this honors class. I expect you to work hard and do well, for yourselves, for our Negaverse, and our queen. I also want to make a special announcement. We have two generals in our presence, General Jedite and the new General- in -training, Zoisite." She indicated the young man and woman in the grey uniforms. The students acknowledged this with awed looks and murmurs among themselves. They were top-notch intellectuals, but not quite as special as the "chosen ones" for the elite rank of general. "They are here to prepare as much as they can for their roles as commanders. The most important lesson for them, and for you also, will be mineral properties. Please open your books to page eighty-three. We will begin our examination of the mineral realm." Zoisite turned to the mineral section in the "Crystal Power" book that Malachite had given her. "The mineral realm rules the physical dimension. It relates to the base upon which you build your life and all the structures within it. The realm is the starting point and foundation of all creative forces within the realms. All that you can see and touch, which has shape and form, is encompassed within the mineral realm. In this realm you can discover more about your relationship to the universe all physical aspects of life. Discover the potential strengths of your physical being. Rocks, stones and crystals are the building blocks of planets and microcosmic particles of these same minerals are found in the body, forming intricate patterns of geometry." Zoisite understood the readings very well and had little difficulty following the lesson. The material seemed very familiar to her, like something she had studied before. She asked and answered questions, and brought up subjects she had, in fact, previously learned long ago. Amethyst recognized her quick ability and her intelligence for the subject. "You seem to have a strong inclination for this, Zoisite. I see our ruler has chosen a good leader," remarked Amethyst. Jedite stared in awe of Zoisite. "Great Negaforce! Not only did Zoisite turn out to be a total babe, but she is smarter than most of the girls in this school." When class was over, Zoisite stood and saw Jedite looking at her. "Um, hi," she said, feeling shy. "My name is Zoisite. But I guess you know that." Then she kicked herself, mentally. "That's great, Zoi, she thought in disgust. You sound just sooo intelligent." "I didn't know our fourth general was such a knock-out," he said. He ran a hand through his blonde locks. "You doing anything now? Like lunch or something?" "That would be nice," thought Zoisite, flushing from his compliment. But she knew she had to obey the whims of His Royal Highness. "Well, actually I have to meet Lord Malachite now. He's my trainer." "Yeah, so I heard. That's really too bad." He hesitated a moment, and then decided he better go. "Well, Zoisite, nice getting to meet you finally. See ya around." Zoisite smiled. Maybe school wouldn't be all bad. She would look forward to her academic classes, at least. ********************************** "So how did you do today? Any problems I should know about?" asked Malachite as he approached Zoisite in the hall. "It went fine," replied Zoisite. "I met another general." She smiled. "Oh?" queried Malachite, taking her arm and steering her down the hall. "General Jedite. He is in my crystal studies class. I sit next to him." Malachite did not like the smile that accompanied those words. Was he feeling jealous? No, he thought, disgustedly. He was not jealous of a little girl and a schoolboy. "Is that so?" he muttered. "Well, he is not as well - educated as I in the magic arts. He will need to study hard, of course," he told Zoisite. Zoisite nodded. "Of course." Amused, she noted the look of annoyance on the lord general's face. Was Malachite feeling a bit of jealousy? Then she remembered there was something she had wanted to ask him. "Malachite?" "What?" "Can I ask you a question?" "Yes, what is it?" "Well, er, where are my parents in this world? My mother and my father? It's been bothering me that I don't know about them." Malachite frowned. "I don't know, Zoisite. Why would I know about your family? Don't you have any knowledge of your background?" Zoisite shook her head. "No. I know I must have a mother and father, but I don't recall them at all. I have to find out where they are." Malachite tried to discourage Zoisite, for her own good. "It's not that important, Zoisite. You will have no time for family. Or any other distractions, for that matter." Malachite had not seen very much of his own parents lately, and dismissed it with the fact that he was too occupied with work. "Beryl knows," thought Zoisite. "She must know. I will ask her." But would Malachite just let her go off alone? Probably not, and she did not want an escort. "Lord Malachite, please go on without me." "Hmm?" "Queen Beryl wished to see me after class today. I got the message in class." Malachite frowned. Usually he was informed of any decision regarding his pupil. "Are you sure?" "Malachite, do you question the orders of your queen?" asked Zoisite. She held her breath, waiting for his answer. "No, I do not." He knew better. "Go then. I will see you later." ********************************** A scream tore from a yoma's throat, echoing out into the hall. "Maybe this isn't such a good idea," thought Zoisite as she approached the queen's audience chamber. Did people just go to see the queen around here? Could they, without getting singed? But she wanted badly to ask about her family. She had to know. She was an important person to the queen, so she should be safe. Taking a deep breath, she strode up before the throne. Smoke lingered in the air. From what, Zoisite did not care to know. "I did not summon you, Zoisite," said Beryl. "What are you doing here?" Zoisite got down on one knee, and placed her arm across her chest. Malachite had taught her that this was the proper salute to royalty and superiors. "Please, Your Majesty, I must ask you a question. About my history." "Leave us," Beryl commanded her minions. An assembly of yoma faded into the shadows. She indicated that Zoisite should stand. "What do you have to ask me?" "My queen, I know nothing of my family. My mother, and father. I do not remember. Do they live in this kingdom? Or on another world I do not know of?" Queen Beryl was silent for a moment, formulating her answer. "No, Zoisite. Your mother died, and so did your father. Years ago. Your mother was a sickly woman, weak in health, and she passed away when you were a child. Your father was a major in my army. He died of a deep sword wound in a battle for our world. You were left in my care, to be raised as a warrior." Dead. So that's what happened to them. How disappointing it was to find that out. She had hoped that somewhere she had some family members. Zoisite suddenly felt very small and very weak before the queen. "Does that answer your question?" "Yes. Thank you, my queen." Zoisite felt very sad. Now there was no chance she could ever meet them again. "You needn't let it disturb you, Zoisite. You are nearly an adult woman after all, and you have much to strive for. Your father was a hero in battle, and you are expected to be the same." "I know." Zoisite knew that it would haunt her, though. "It just feels so strange not to recall them at all." "It is unfortunate," said Beryl, "but it is the result of your recent kidnapping. You were taken away from me and made to forget your warrior's life here," lied the queen. "Everything about your past, they tried to erase. I have done my best to help you, but even my power cannot fully restore your mind. You may never recover your full memory." She feigned regret, looking at the young girl. "But you know, don't you?" asked Zoisite, wondering if she really did. "Yes, my child. Remember, always to come to me," said Beryl, "should you have questions. I will answer them." "Yes," said Zoisite. "I think I will leave now, Your Majesty." She bowed, turned and walked out of the chamber. Beryl watched her go. "I must keep that girl under my control," she thought. Zoisite was unique from the others in that she was naturally more innocent and introspective. Of course, she was a young female, so it was to be expected. That meant tight control over her. "Zoisite must be loyal to our cause. She must always trust my word." Rising, the queen sought the wisdom of the Negaforce. End of Part 11.
