He watched it warily from the window of the tower room, the same room where he and his son had studied their magic for years. Except now, Malachite was not there. Lord Malachon had a deep love for his only son, who in most ways was exactly like his father - talented, wise, and extremely handsome. So it was of course to be expected that the little Princess Zoisite would fall in love with Malachon's son. Malachon had a fondness for Zoisite and wanted her to be with Malachite as much as she did. Lord Malachon was not taking his son's abduction lightly. He had every intention of getting Malachite back. And those clouds looked like the ones that had been present at Queen Serenity's ball. He could use his powers to rescue his son - if he could just figure out what he was up against. "Husband?" Celica's voice drifted over his shoulder. She looked worried. She probably thought the same thing that he did about the storm. "Yes, I know," said Malachon. "I believe we will see the sorceress again." "Do you think Malachite will be with her?" asked Celica. "I don't know. I don't understand what she wants him for..." "Well, just looking at him, what would a woman want?" said his wife, implying that Malachite was for Beryl's bed. "No, dear." Malachon smiled tightly. "She is in love with that Prince Darien. I don't know why she captured our son." "What shall we do?" asked his wife. "Everyone is getting nervous." "We will have to fight this woman." "Are you going to summon our armies?" "No. I don't believe that will work. This is powerful magic we are dealing with, so I will have to face it." "Just be careful," said Celica. "I don't want to lose you." "Don't worry, everything will be all right soon," said Malachon, hoping it would be. Malachite stared unknowingly at the kingdom of his birth, preparing himself for battle with the enemy, an army at his back. His cape blew in the wind as the storm settled over the land. "Another kingdom will soon be ours," he thought. Queen Beryl's army descended and everything was shrouded in darkness. The idea was to make them surrender and then put them under Queen Beryl's wicked spell. She needed all the Crystalverse kingdoms for her Negaverse. She smiled evilly. How ironic to have Prince Malachite take over his own home kingdom and put it under her power! Malachon saw his son amidst the hovering dark clouds. Malachite caught his eye and they stared into each other's eyes. Malachite's face lit up with recognition. He knew this man, somehow. He walked forward to be face to face with his father. "Malachite?" "Yes..." This man knew his name.... and looked just like him, only older. "You have changed somehow, my son." Malachon looked Malachite over. There was something different about the handsome young lord. A coldness that wasn't there before. "Your son?" questioned Malachite. "You ...you are my father?" "Don't you know?" said Malachon, staring into Malachite's eyes, cool but with a tiny spark of recognition glowing inside. Not even Queen Beryl could wipe out everything completely. There were some memories embedded into Malachite's soul. The memory of his family was one of them. Malachite stared into his father's face. Queen Beryl said this was the enemy. But this man felt so familiar... For some strange reason Malachite felt the urge to embrace him. Queen Beryl saw Malachite with his father. "Damn! What is he doing! I thought I made sure he wouldn't remember his father," scowled Beryl. But then she considered that Malachite was the very image of his father, remarkably alike. It was rather like looking into a mirror for him to see his father. And she knew how much Malachite cared for his beloved father. "If he remembers, it will ruin everything," thought Beryl. She had to do something. Celica watched nervously from a window in the sturdy castle. She saw Malachite and her heart leaped with excitement. Malachite was safe! Celica wanted to run down to him and hug him close in her arms, like a loving mother would, but Malachon had told her to remain inside their castle. She would have to wait until her husband dealt with the enemy. Suddenly, Celica felt very weak. A shadow passed before her eyes, dancing and twisting around in front of her. The world around her seemed to go dark and cold. Queen Beryl had cast her dark spell of "nega" energy over the kingdom. She smiled with satisfaction. Now the inhabitants were under her command. "Your son," repeated Malachite as he stared almost hypnotized into his father's eyes. "It must be true." "Yes," replied Malachon. "I sent you to join Queen Beryl's army, remember? Your mother and I were so proud when you became a general." "Yes, of course," said Malachite. He smiled, happy that he did indeed have parents. "And where is my mother?" he asked. "She is inside." replied Malachon. Queen Beryl appeared at their side, triumphant in her conquest. "Ah, the illustrious queen," said Malachon. He would have to be out of his mind to say something like that under the circumstances. But things had changed a bit. He did not know that he had just been brainwashed by dark Negaforce energy. Queen Beryl smiled. Her dark power had worked. "Your son is making quite a magnificent warrior," she said. Malachon beamed, proud of his son. "Would you like to come inside?" he asked the queen. "My wife is waiting." "Very well," said Queen Beryl. "But not for too long. We have much to do, don't we, Malachite?" They went inside and Celica came down to meet them. "Malachite you have returned," Celica said. "How good you look." "Your Majesty," she said, noting the queen by his side. "Yes, I cannot stay long, though," said Malachite. "Queen Beryl tells me we have much to do about the surrounding kingdoms. We also must still locate our missing warrior general." "Oh, wow, why don't you sit down and tell us about it," offered Celica, showing them to a sitting room nearby. "I am rather unfamiliar with all of this." They sat inside the castle. Malachite was still a bit confused. "Your Majesty, when you rescued me you did not mention my parents. Why is that?" Queen Beryl was prepared with a lie for an answer. "Oh, I did not want to overwhelm you, of course," she said. "You had been through a lot. It was enough that you woke up back in my kingdom. I assumed that too much information would only confuse you. After all, you have much responsibility and you are still learning. Although you and Neflite and Jedite have been named my generals, you still need more of your proper training. I could not make you know everything at once." "What happened? Malachite was indeed missing," said Celica. "Malachite was taken prisoner by our enemies in Zoisica. He was brainwashed and lost all memories of his queen and his place in my kingdom," said Beryl. "Zoisica?" said Malachon. "I've heard of that place." "Yes, the mutinous scum that live there kidnapped your son," lied Beryl. "But we will straighten them out and teach them who is ruler. They are our next target," said Beryl. And so Malachite was reunited with his parents. But it was not to be the same... ************************************* "Zoisite, where are you going?" asked Queen Zoey, noticing her daughter running down the curving staircase in her riding dress and boots. "I want to go for a ride on Lady Lyra, mother," answered Zoisite. "I need to get out for a while. Is that okay?" "Of course, darling," replied Zoey, glad that her daughter was leaving the sanctuary of her bedroom for awhile to spend some time with her beloved horse. **************************************** Back in the dark Negaverse kingdom of Queen Beryl, plans were being made to capture the little princess Zoisite and make her into a Negaverse warrior. The queen sat on her throne, waiting for the man she had summoned to come to her. After several minutes, Malachite appeared in the dark audience chamber. "You wished to see me, Your Majesty?" he asked. He had been studying some magic books that he had brought back to the dark kingdom from his tower room in his parent's castle. "Yes, Malachite. I have a very important assignment for you," said Queen Beryl. Malachite was busy enough, though he did not say so. He was studying, training and also supervising the creation of a Negaverse warrior academy, so that the newly conquered soon-to-be Negaverse warriors could sharpen their skills. All the inhabitants of the conquered Crystalverse kingdoms would serve Queen Beryl in one way or another. Special ones became officers of the Negaverse army. Most would be regular fighters. Lower persons were just servants. And some just lived their lives as Negaverse citizens, subject to Beryl's rule. "I have located the one who will be our fourth general," said Queen Beryl. "The girl?" thought Malachite, remembering that the soon-to-be fourth warrior general was a she. He wondered how a weak, delicate girl was going to be a Negaverse warrior. An image of a beautiful young girl filled Queen Beryl's crystal and was projected forth so that Malachite could see her. She had long wavy copper hair, green eyes framed with long lashes and the face of an angel. Malachite stood mesmerized by her beauty. "Zoisite," he said softly. Queen Beryl heard him. "You know her?" she demanded, afraid that his memory was returning to him. "You know her name?" "You mentioned her name before," said Malachite, although it was not Queen Beryl's previous mention of Zoisite that caused him to remember her name. It was something else that made him remember. "So I did," said Queen Beryl, relieved. Of course, nothing could break the spell she had over Malachite. "I want you to go and bring Zoisite back to me, understand? She is not to be harmed, but if you need to, cast a spell over her to sedate her. I want her to be brought here before we take over Zoisica. That is where she is right now." Malachite paid attention as Queen Beryl showed him precisely where the kingdom of Zoisica was located. "When you get Zoisite, bring her straight to me," ordered Queen Beryl. "And do not listen to her. She may say some outrageous things but do not believe what she says. Zoisite has been brainwashed. I must cure her." Malachite bowed. "Yes, Your Majesty. It shall be done." Princess Zoisite was off riding in the orchard for the first time in many weeks since Malachite had been captured. Her golden colored mare galloped gracefully through the cherry trees and flower gardens. Falling pink petals whirled past Zoisite as she headed for the pond. She could almost be happy - almost. Zoisite kept hoping for Prince Malachite to return. One day, he would kneel at her feet and ask her to be his bride, and she would happily say yes to him. Maybe one day she would have a little daughter and son that looked like herself and Malachite. They would be very happy together... Zoisite reached the pond. She slid off Lady Lyra and let her drink from the cool clear water. Pink cherry petals fell into the water, causing ripples. Swans glided in pairs through the water. Swans were so beautiful. Zoey had told Zoisite that they mated for life. Zoisite knelt down at the edge of the pond and swirled her hand around in the water, making ripples that joined with those of the swans. Suddenly, the swans all flew away, as if they had been startled. Zoisite snapped her head up. She gasped, stunned by what she saw. A handsome man with long white hair and a cape, staring at her from across the pond. It could only be Malachite! Zoisite was so stunned she couldn't speak. Malachite floated over the pond to Zoisite and landed right in front of her kneeling form. "Hello, Zoisite," Malachite said, looking down at the girl with a superior air. "I have come for you." He stood firmly above her, his silver-blue eyes gleaming. "You...you have?" asked Zoisite. For some reason, she felt a little bit afraid. There was something different about Malachite... Malachite sensed the young girl's fear. He did not want to frighten her. Malachite felt a strange urge to protect Zoisite - she was so delicate and pretty. The dress she wore, a dark green, complimented her lovely features. She was so sweet looking - like an angel. "Yes," Malachite answered softly. "I am taking you to my queen. You must come with me." Different emotions welled up in Zoisite. She didn't quite understand Malachite. She wanted to ask him what had happened. "Malachite..." she started to say. Malachite drew Zoisite into his arms and quieted her in the gentlest way he knew how - with a kiss - a kiss meant to sedate her until she was brought to Queen Beryl. Malachite was confused by his feelings for the girl and so he wished to silence her until Queen Beryl dealt with her. Zoisite swooned as Malachite's lips touched hers and his tongue gently thrust its way into her mouth. A slow, sleepy weakness crept through her. Malachite had returned and he was kissing her - but it felt a little strange. What exactly had happened to her love? Zoisite would not find that out for a very long time. For as Malachite kissed her she was being drowned in a darkness that consumed her delicate form.
